A planned remake of the critically acclaimed action role-playing game Bloodborne was reportedly blocked by FromSoftware, the game’s original developer, despite being greenlit by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The decision casts a shadow over hopes for a modernized version of the 2015 PlayStation 4 exclusive and contributed to the recent closure of Bluepoint Games, the studio tasked with the remake.

Bluepoint Games, known for its high-quality remasters like Demon’s Souls, pitched the Bloodborne remake to Sony in early 2025, according to a report from Bloomberg. While Sony reportedly saw the project as viable, FromSoftware ultimately rejected the proposal. This news arrives after Sony unexpectedly shuttered Bluepoint Games just five years after acquiring the studio, raising questions about the future of high-fidelity remakes within the PlayStation ecosystem.

Bloodborne has maintained a dedicated fanbase since its release, praised for its challenging gameplay, gothic aesthetic, and intricate world design. Demand for a remake or sequel has remained consistently high, particularly as Bluepoint Games demonstrated its ability to successfully revitalize FromSoftware titles with the 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls for the PlayStation 5. The success of that project fueled speculation that Bloodborne would be next.

The reasons behind FromSoftware’s decision remain somewhat unclear, but insights from former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida suggest a strong attachment to the original vision. Yoshida theorized last year that Bloodborne game director and FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki was hesitant to allow others to modify his operate, stating, “My theory is: Because I remember Miyazaki-san, he really, really loved Bloodborne… I think he is interested, but he’s so successful, and he’s so busy, he cannot do [it] himself, but he doesn’t want anyone else to touch it.”

Prior to pitching the Bloodborne remake, Bluepoint Games had been working on a live-service game within the God of War franchise. That project was canceled in January 2025 after Sony determined it wasn’t a good fit for the studio’s strengths. The team then turned its attention to Bloodborne as a potential next project, hoping to capitalize on their proven track record with FromSoftware titles.

According to reports, FromSoftware holds the ultimate authority over how Bloodborne is handled. The company reportedly communicated that while a remake made financial sense, they did not want it to proceed. This decision ultimately contributed to Bluepoint Games’ inability to secure a new project and its subsequent closure.

The situation highlights the complexities of intellectual property rights and creative control within the gaming industry. While Sony owns the Bloodborne IP, FromSoftware’s reluctance to relinquish control over the project effectively stalled any remake efforts. The news dashes the hopes of fans eager to revisit the world of Yharnam on modern hardware, and underscores the challenges facing studios hoping to revitalize beloved classic games.
