Gijón Cat Needs Help: Woman Appeals for Funds for Sick Pet

A woman in Gijón, Spain, is seeking financial assistance to cover the cost of treatment for her cat, Marlon, who is battling a life-threatening viral infection. The case highlights the emotional and financial burdens pet owners often face when their animals require extensive medical care, and underscores the growing trend of crowdfunding for veterinary expenses.

Rocío González launched a crowdfunding campaign after learning Marlon, a seven-year-traditional cat, has feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). According to González, FIP is a potentially fatal disease caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus, leading to widespread inflammation of vital organs and progressive weakening of the animal.

Whereas FIP was once considered a death sentence for cats, advancements in veterinary medicine have led to treatments that can significantly improve the prognosis and even result in full recovery. However, these treatments are expensive. González estimates Marlon’s treatment will cost approximately 2,500 euros, a sum she attributes to his weight of seven kilograms, which requires “the double of medication” compared to smaller cats.

The situation is particularly poignant as it follows another recent incident in Gijón involving a cat. In December 2025, a cat died after falling from a fourth-story window onto a pedestrian. While the pedestrian was reportedly unharmed, the incident prompted the cat’s owner to offer his contact information and led to a potential police report. El Comercio reported on the event, and a similar incident was reported in Gipuzkoa, where a pedestrian was injured after a cat fell on them from a fourth-floor building. Noticias de Gipuzkoa covered that story.

González’s efforts to save Marlon demonstrate the deep bond between people and their pets, and the lengths to which owners will head to ensure their companions’ well-being. La Voz de Asturias detailed her story on February 24, 2026, noting that she is determined to “remove heaven and earth” to provide Marlon with the best possible quality of life.
