1:11 PM PT — The NYPD confirmed to TMZ that officers responded to a 911 call just after 5 PM on Thursday and found Eugene Thomas King Jr. unconscious. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is currently investigating the cause of his death.
Eugene Thomas King Jr. – the convicted bank robber who held a gun to Paula Deen‘s temple in 1987 – has died in New York City, TMZ has learned.
Sources close to the family told TMZ that King was found dead Thursday inside his Brooklyn apartment. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently unknown.
The NYPD, FDNY and the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner have been contacted for further information.
King remained largely out of the public eye for years after the 1987 armed robbery of Deen, who was working as a bank teller at the time. Deen has said King held a gun to her temple during the incident, and he was later convicted of the crime.
King resurfaced in 2013, during the controversy surrounding Deen’s admission of using racial slurs while recounting the robbery. In an interview with Inside Edition, he apologized to Deen for the fear he caused and expressed remorse for his actions.
At the time, he acknowledged the robbery and said he was sorry for putting her through a frightening ordeal. King had largely remained out of the spotlight in recent years.
