The ambitious, hand-drawn platformer The Eternal Life of Goldman, developed by Weappy, is gaining attention for its distinctive analog art style. The game’s visual approach deliberately evokes a handcrafted feel, and that’s precisely what the developers aimed for.
Recently, producer Andreas Schmiedecker confirmed that generative AI tools were not considered during the game’s development. He explained that incorporating such technology would fundamentally contradict the core artistic vision of the project:
“Using AI tools for art production in this game would largely counteract the entire idea of making it this way in the first place. It wasn’t really an option for us. Regardless of how the technology evolves right now, there is a place and an audience for handcrafted art,” Schmiedecker said.
This commitment to traditional artistry reflects a growing debate within the gaming industry about the role of AI in creative processes. The developers’ stance underscores the value placed on human skill and artistic expression, even as AI tools become more prevalent.
In a detailed interview, the team discusses various aspects of the game’s development, design, and the journey they’ve undertaken over the past several years.
