Fredrik von Arnold, a former judge and longtime figure in Uppsala, Sweden, has died at the age of 76, according to reports. He is survived by his wife, Sara and daughter, Karin, and her family.
Von Arnold spent the majority of his career in the Swedish judicial system, most recently serving as a judge and head of Uppsala District Court. His dedication to the law was matched by a deep engagement with the Uppsala Cathedral Parish and a lifelong interest in the military, stemming from his prior service as a reserve officer in the army. This blend of interests defined his character, colleagues shared.
Those who knew him remember a man who combined extensive legal knowledge with a commitment to fairness and objectivity, alongside a keen understanding of societal issues. His attention to detail and impeccable style were hallmarks of his personality, as was his warm sense of humor and ability to forge lasting friendships. Becoming part of the circle shared by Fredrik and Sara was considered a privilege, whether through summers spent in Marielund, shared hobbies, or mutual acquaintances.
As their children grew, the friendships deepened, leading to the creation of the “Kräftans vänkrets” (Cancer’s Circle of Friends) during a memorable crayfish party on Ljusterö. This annual event became a cherished tradition, alongside numerous other gatherings. Von Arnold was known for his contributions to these events, particularly his remarkable memory for song lyrics and his infectious enthusiasm.
Friends recall how Von Arnold enriched their lives with his insights and thoughtful contributions to discussions. Cultural outings, museum visits, and exhibitions were particularly enjoyable with Sara and Fredrik, who were central to the group’s strong bonds. Their hospitality, especially during the annual spring dinner adorned with wood anemones, will be fondly remembered.
The friendships were likewise nurtured through several memorable trips together, including New Year’s in Vienna, the Passion Play in Oberammergau, a performance of “Aida” in Verona, and frequent visits to Dalarna to explore the local culture and traditional boat rowing.
Fredrik was a warm and dependable person, known for his ability to appreciate life and his resilience in the face of challenges. He served as an example of strength and stability, particularly enjoying time with his wife, Sara, at Rosentorp and Marielund, where long walks became his signature activity, always accompanied by a cheerful disposition and a broad smile.
“That is how we will remember Fredrik!” a friend shared. The Kräftans vänkrets expressed deep sorrow and loss, while also expressing gratitude for the many wonderful years spent together.
