Respiratory Failure Cited as Cause of Death
According to People, the “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria” actor died from respiratory failure, as stated on his death certificate.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was listed as an underlying cause of death.
Dane publicly announced his ALS diagnosis last year, a neurological disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or Charcot’s disease.
Charcot’s disease is a severe degenerative illness caused by “the progressive death of motor neurons, the nerve cells that direct and control voluntary muscles,” explains the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm).
The disease leads to progressive paralysis of the muscles involved in voluntary movement, and also affects phonation and swallowing. Patients typically have a life expectancy of three to five years following diagnosis.
Eric Dane was widely recognized for his memorable role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” beginning in 2006, where he portrayed the charming surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan. He appeared in 139 episodes through 2021. The role cemented his status as a television heartthrob and a familiar face to audiences.
He also starred in HBO’s dramatic series Euphoria, playing Cal Jacobs.
