Israel Deploys Troops to Lebanon Border Amid Hezbollah Tensions

Israel has bolstered its forces along the border with Lebanon, authorizing its military to occupy additional strategic positions in response to potential attacks, officials announced Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The move comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent exchanges between Israel and Iran, and retaliatory rocket fire from Lebanon’s Hezbollah group. The development underscores growing regional instability as multiple conflict fronts emerge.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I authorized the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to advance and take additional strategic positions in Lebanon in order to prevent attacks against Israeli border communities,” stated Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz.

The IDF confirmed that additional ground troops had been deployed to southern Lebanon. According to early reports, the troop movements are not intended as a full-scale offensive.

“I wish to emphasize that this is not a maneuver, a ground attack, or something similar. This is a tactical step intended to prevent Hezbollah attacks,” IDF Spokesperson Nadav Shoshani told reporters.

Shoshani added, “There is a real possibility that they may intensify their operations against us.”

The IDF spokesperson declined to specify the number of Israeli soldiers currently stationed in the neighboring country.

Until now, Israeli forces had been positioned in five locations in southern Lebanon. They have now taken up additional positions near the border.

These positions are strategically located with views of Israeli towns, Shoshani explained. He stated that Hezbollah could potentially use these locations to directly fire upon residential areas or attempt to infiltrate them.

“That is why we are deploying troops there: to ensure that they do not have the ability to do so,” Shoshani said.

The escalation follows a weekend that saw the United States and Israel launch a large-scale attack against Iran, which then retaliated with rocket strikes against U.S. Bases in several Persian Gulf states. Reports indicate that the attacks resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In response, Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese group, launched several rockets into Israel, opening another front in the conflict. Israel responded with airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, including targets in the capital, Beirut.
