Accidental Studios’ psychological horror puzzle game, “Subliminal,” is set to launch globally on Steam March 31, the company announced Wednesday.

Inspired by the “Backrooms” phenomenon, “Subliminal” centers around navigating liminal spaces – transitional or abandoned areas – and unraveling a mystery within fragmented memories. The game utilizes Unreal Engine 5, featuring Lumen global illumination and Nanite virtualized geometry to deliver high-fidelity graphics. This focus on visual detail, including textures, light reflection, and shadow rendering, aims to create an immersive and unsettling experience.

Players awaken within broken memories and must trace a path to uncover hidden truths. Familiar locations, such as childhood bedrooms, long corridors, and indoor water parks, are distorted and reconfigured, contributing to the game’s unique atmosphere. The developers emphasize a non-jump-scare approach, instead focusing on psychological horror and exploring inner trauma.

The game’s core mechanic revolves around manipulating light and shadow to reconstruct spaces based on memories. This innovative puzzle system, combined with the surreal environments, aims to maximize a “dreamcore” and “weirdcore” aesthetic.

“Subliminal” is a collaborative effort, with publishing support from Infini Fun and Gone Shootin. The release signals a growing trend of independent developers leveraging advanced game engines like Unreal Engine 5 to create atmospheric and psychologically engaging experiences.
