Google Maps is receiving a visual refresh with a new gradient icon rolling out to both Android and iOS devices, beginning March 3, 2026.

The updated icon retains the familiar pin shape but features a modernized design. According to reports, the top ring of the pin is now thinner, while the inner circle has been significantly enlarged. The previous diagonal partitions have been removed, replaced with a four-color gradient inspired by Google’s Gemini AI and design language.

The rollout began with version 26.09.06.873668274 of Google Maps for Android and version 26.09.5 for iOS. While the icon remains recognizable, users may need some time to adjust to the updated proportions. This design change follows similar gradient icon updates for other Google apps, including Photos, Home, Gemini, and Search.

The update to Google Maps comes as the company continues to integrate its Gemini AI technology into the platform. Recent additions include a conversational navigation experience and Gemini-powered traffic reporting, as well as integration with Google Lens. The move highlights Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance its mapping services with artificial intelligence.
