Google has recently updated its mapping application with a redesigned icon.
Following a refresh of Google Photos a few weeks ago, Google Maps is now receiving a logo change. For several months, Google has been working on a comprehensive overhaul of the icons for its mobile applications.
The Mountain View-based company has successively redesigned the icons for Gemini, the Google Search “G,” and, most recently, the icon for its Google Photos app. It has just deployed the new graphic identity for Google Maps on both Android and iOS.
A Gradient-Based Logo
As with its other applications, Google has retained the original “design” – the pin for Google Maps – but has modernized it. The opening of the pin has been widened, and the application of colors, which previously used a fairly geometric diagonal pattern, has been replaced with a much smoother gradient.
This new design, perfectly aligned with the new graphic charter applied to other Google applications, is currently being rolled out. The new Google Maps logo is visible with the latest version of the application, version 26.09.06.873668274 on Android, and version 26.09.5 on iOS.
Several weeks ago, Google raised concerns among some users. Without warning, the Mountain View company drastically restricted access to certain information typically displayed in Google Maps. Google chose to remove access to reviews posted by other users, as well as photos, for users not logged in with a Google account on the platform.
While the company has not officially justified its decision, it may have been made to prevent large-scale data “scraping” by bots.

Google is continuing a broader effort to modernize the visual identity of its core applications, bringing a more consistent aesthetic across its product suite. The changes to Google Maps, while subtle, reflect a wider trend in tech towards simplified and visually harmonious design. The recent restriction of access to reviews and photos for non-logged-in users highlights the ongoing tension between providing open access to information and protecting data from automated extraction. The updated Google Maps icon is now available to users with the latest version of the app – version 26.09.06.873668274 on Android and version 26.09.5 on iOS. The redesign maintains the familiar pin shape but introduces a smoother gradient color scheme, aligning it with the updated gaze of other Google applications like Gemini and Google Photos. This move is part of a larger initiative by the company to refresh the icons across its mobile apps, offering a more modern and cohesive visual experience.
