A unique cultural tradition is gaining recognition in Sweden, as the celebration known as “Fössta tossdan i mass” – roughly translated as “First Thursday in March” – was added to the country’s list of intangible cultural heritage in 2024. The tradition centers around enjoying *massipantåta*, a marzipan cake, and acknowledges a distinctive regional pronunciation.

The phenomenon originated as a playful nod to the Småland dialect, where the “R” sound is often dropped, according to reports. Siblings Jonas and Matilda Svenningsson, who grew up in Gnosjö, are credited with establishing the tradition. The idea stemmed from their aunt, who habitually said “fössta mass” when referring to the first of March.

“The best thing is the marzipan cake”

The tradition began in 2010 when the siblings created a Facebook page dedicated to the phrase “Fössta tossdagen i mass.” The date, the first Thursday in March, was chosen for its abundance of “R” sounds preceding an “S,” mirroring the dialectical pronunciation.

What began as a local custom has spread throughout Sweden, and the recognition as an intangible cultural heritage underscores its growing importance to the nation’s identity. The designation came after suggestions from the public.

“The best thing about fössta tossdan i mass is eating massipantåta,” said Linnea Jonsson, 12, of Kalmar.

The celebration, sometimes referred to as Småland’s unofficial national day, highlights the importance of regional dialects and culinary traditions in Swedish culture. According to Swedish media reports, the tradition is no longer limited to expatriates from Småland.
