An explosion struck near the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway, early Sunday, March 8, 2026, prompting a large police response and raising concerns about a potential terrorist motive. The incident, which caused significant damage to the embassy’s entrance area, occurred around 1:00 a.m. Local time, according to reports.
Norwegian police dispatched “significant forces” to the scene after receiving reports of a loud blast near the diplomatic compound, located approximately seven kilometers from Oslo’s city center. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the cause and identify those responsible.
Frode Larsen, head of the Oslo Police Department’s investigation and intelligence unit, told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK that one hypothesis is that the incident was an act of terrorism. Still, investigators are also exploring other possible motives.
“We are not stuck on a single version, we need to be open to the possibility that there may be other causes behind what has happened,” Larsen stated. He added, “It’s natural to see this in the context of the current security situation and that this could be an attack deliberately targeting the U.S. Embassy.”
According to early reports, police are still searching for the perpetrator(s) and have not yet identified any suspects. The blast comes amid heightened global security concerns and underscores the ongoing risks faced by diplomatic missions worldwide.
Images circulating on social media display shattered glass in front of the consulate entrance, with a cracked glass door and burn marks on the floor. The U.S. Diplomatic mission has not yet commented on the incident.
Norwegian authorities have condemned the incident. Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide emphasized the importance of the security of diplomatic representations in Norway, and stated he had contacted Eric Meyer, the U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires.
Police are requesting assistance from the public in their investigation, urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything related to the incident to come forward with information.
