Kristi Noem, former Secretary of Internal Security, revealed in her autobiography that she shot her dog, Cricket, a year-old German shorthaired pointer. The incident, detailed in her book “No Going Back” (August 2023), has drawn scrutiny and reportedly derailed her ambitions to be considered as Donald Trump’s running mate in the November 2024 election.

Noem described Cricket as a rambunctious puppy who “wanted to run around and chase everything that flew,” ultimately ruining a pheasant hunt. She stated the dog was “less than useless as a hunting dog” and made a difficult decision, taking Cricket to a gravel pit and shooting her. The revelation is part of a pattern of controversial animal-related incidents detailed in the book, including the killing of a goat she deemed “disgusting, and rancid.”

The former Secretary’s account of the incident has sparked widespread discussion, highlighting the ethical considerations surrounding animal welfare and the personal choices of public figures. The disclosure comes as Noem’s political future remains uncertain, with the incident potentially impacting her standing within the Republican party and her prospects for future office.
