WASHINGTON — The U.S. Military announced Monday, March 9, 2026, that an American service member has died from injuries sustained during an initial Iranian counterattack last week, according to the Associated Press. This brings the total number of U.S. Military fatalities in the conflict, which began with Israeli and U.S. Strikes on Iran on Saturday, February 28, to seven.

“Yesterday (Saturday) evening, a member of the U.S. Armed Forces succumbed to wounds sustained during the initial attacks by the Iranian regime in the Middle East. The service member was critically injured in the attack on U.S. Forces in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on March 1,” a statement from the regional command of the U.S. Armed Forces read. The military stated it will release the service member’s identity once family notification has been completed.

The current conflict in the Middle East began with U.S. And Israeli strikes against Iran on the morning of Saturday, February 28. Iran quickly retaliated with military strikes, launching missiles and drones at Israel, as well as at U.S. Bases and other targets in the Persian Gulf region. The operation, dubbed Epic Fury, resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader.
