A cancer diagnosis dramatically alters a person’s life, extending beyond the medical impact to often-overlooked emotional dimensions like feelings of isolation. Recognizing this critical need for support, a new Spanish application, OncoloMeeting, has been developed to connect cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, volunteers and healthcare organizations within a secure community.

The app is an initiative of the Fundación OncoloMeeting, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a united oncology community. Access to supportive networks can significantly improve quality of life for those navigating a cancer journey, and this app aims to provide just that.

OncoloMeeting: An App Offering Support for People with Cancer

OncoloMeeting aims to create a safe space where individuals affected by cancer – those currently battling the disease, survivors, and their loved ones – can find mutual support and understanding. The platform is designed to facilitate the sharing of experiences, answer questions, and provide companionship during a profoundly challenging time.

The project was founded by Cristina Medina, an actress and cancer survivor who serves as president of the foundation. She is joined by David Galván, a tax advisor and survivor of Ewing sarcoma, and Dr. Javier Anchuelo, a radiation oncologist actively involved in research.

The app combines personal experience with medical expertise to offer a service that genuinely supports patients, families, and loved ones. It aims to be more than just another app, providing meaningful connection and guidance.

OncoloMeeting offers a private and anonymous platform where users can connect with others who have shared or are currently experiencing similar situations. The goal is to find “equals” – individuals who truly understand the implications of a diagnosis, treatment, or recovery.

Users can create a profile and begin connecting with other members of the community within the app. The platform likewise suggests contacts based on various factors, including tumor type, treatment plan, and geographic proximity.

Recognizing the emotional toll on families, OncoloMeeting also acknowledges the role of caregivers. The app understands that family and close friends often experience the process with similar intensity.

OncoloMeeting features a volunteer program offering various services, from daily support to professional assistance. Healthcare professionals, physiotherapists, and other specialists can contribute their expertise on a pro bono basis within the community.

OncoloMeeting is available for download on Google Play and the App Store for a price of 4.99 euros.
