The Legend of Khiimori: Realistic Horse Riding Sim Gains Steam Praise & RDR2 Comparisons

Even as the release of Slay the Spire 2 and Marathon dominated headlines last week, another title quietly launched on PC and quickly gained traction. Aesir Interactive’s debut project, The Legend of Khiimori, entered early access and has already garnered significant praise and comparisons to industry benchmarks in realism.

Developed by the German studio Aesir Interactive, the game places players in the role of a Yam messenger traversing the landscapes of 13th-century Mongolia. This role mirrors the historical function of the Yam system, a vital communication network that spanned Eurasia, delivering messages, packages, and official correspondence across vast distances. The game’s focus on realistic travel and logistical challenges highlights a growing trend in simulation games that prioritize immersive experiences.

Often described as a ‘Death Stranding’ set in the medieval period,’ Khiimori centers the gameplay experience around the player’s horse. The game incorporates survival mechanics, requiring players to care for their mount – feeding and healing it – to endure arduous journeys, while simultaneously building a relationship with the animal and enhancing their reputation as a messenger. Currently in an “unfinished” state, lacking a full story mode and primarily offering side missions, the game has still achieved an 80% positive review rating and widespread acclaim.

Players and Experts Alike Praise The Legend of Khiimori

A recurring theme in player feedback is the game’s remarkably realistic portrayal of horses and their integral role in the experience. GryOnline noted that, “If you liked Red Dead Redemption 2 for its horses and landscapes, this game is for you.” Players have consistently highlighted the depth of the horse-related systems – from animal care to environmental exploration – as a key element of enjoyment.

The level of detail, while not overly complex, is considered engaging enough to warrant a look, according to player reviews. Everything from the distribution of weight in saddlebags to the physics of the environment impacts the horse’s movement, potentially leading to injury or even death. This level of systemic interaction is a hallmark of increasingly sophisticated game simulations.

The project’s realism has even extended beyond the typical gaming audience. Professional equine photographer Chelsea Farace, who has tested around thirty horse-themed titles, told PC Gamer that Aesir’s open world possesses “a realism that I haven’t experienced since Red Dead Redemption 2.” She specifically highlighted the horses’ natural reactions to threats like wolves, their swimming mechanics, and complex systems governing terrain, weight distribution, and genetics during breeding as contributing to a more immersive simulation.

In related news, Microsoft’s CEO has outlined the company’s vision for the future of Xbox and the importance of gaming.

Also, the popular Steam game Slay the Spire 2 is nearing player counts comparable to the highly anticipated Silksong, and is being praised for its monetization approach.
