A photograph taken in 1941 has sparked a frenzy online, with social media users believing they’ve spotted a familiar object in the vintage image. The black-and-white photo, captured by Edward Rosskam outside a Chicago movie theater, depicts a crowd lining up to witness a film.
The people in the photo, a mix of adults and teens, are dressed in their finest attire, many sporting hats or headbands.
Remarkably, a user on Reddit pointed out what appears to be an Apple iPad being held by a young man in the photo. The image was posted to the subreddit r/timetravelerscaught with the caption: “Moviegoer with iPad, far right.”

However, not everyone is convinced by the time-travel theory. Some commenters suggest the object could be something more commonplace.
“Looks like a book to me,” one person wrote.
“Back in the early days of cinema, theater staff would check moviegoers for pens and notebooks to prevent illegal film reproduction,” another user added.
“If I could time travel and have an iPad, why would I go to the South Side of Chicago in 1941 to watch a daytime showing of ‘The Aldrich Family?!'” one commenter exclaimed.
Beyond the debate over potential time travel, many viewers have been captivated by the fashion on display in the photograph.
“Everyone is so well-dressed. Wearing your best clothes to go to the movies on a Sunday must have been quite an experience,” one person noted.
“Part of me wishes we all dressed like this for little things, and then I consider whether I’ll shower today,” another joked.
