A building undergoing demolition collapsed Monday in downtown Mexico City, leaving at least four people trapped, with one individual already rescued, according to authorities.
The incident occurred on Calzada San Antonio Abad and Antonio Chavero in the Tránsito neighborhood, within the Cuauhtémoc borough in central Mexico City.
The Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) initially reported in a statement that the collapse was “uncontrolled” and that four people appeared to be trapped.
Shortly after, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada told reporters that the rescued worker was transported for medical attention due to “multiple traumas.” She added that the building was privately owned and had been in the process of demolition following damage sustained in the 2017 earthquake.
“Emergency teams are already working to rescue the people trapped after the building’s collapse. We ask citizens to avoid the area and allow emergency services to work,” Brugada said on X.
Initial reports indicate that at least 50 construction workers were carrying out demolition work when the structure fell.
The Secretary of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection, Miriam Urzúa, stated that the workers were demolishing the third level of the building when the collapse occurred.
Mexico City emergency services continue to work at the scene, conducting rescue operations.
