Spain and Morocco Strengthen Ties, Discuss Key Issues
Madrid – Spain and Morocco are signaling a period of strengthened cooperation, with top diplomats from both nations holding meetings in Madrid on February 9, 2026. The discussions underscore a growing partnership between the two countries, particularly in areas of trade and security.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares met with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, describing the relationship between Spain and Morocco as “among the strongest globally.” Albares stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that their “friendship and cooperation have reached unprecedented levels.”
Economic ties were a key focus of the meeting, with Albares highlighting projections for bilateral trade to reach 21 billion euros by 2025. He similarly emphasized the importance of collaboration on migration and security issues, stating that such cooperation is “crucial in safeguarding and stabilizing our citizens.”
The meetings took place shortly after Albares concluded talks with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. While Albares did not publicly address ongoing negotiations regarding Western Sahara during his meeting with Bourita – talks brokered by the United States – he plans to meet with Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Western Sahara, in the near future. This suggests continued diplomatic efforts to resolve the long-standing dispute, as reported by The Arab Weekly.
The renewed focus on strengthening ties with Morocco comes as Spain navigates complex regional relationships, seeking to balance cooperation with neighboring countries. The deepening partnership is expected to have implications for regional stability and economic development.
