PSG’s Donnarumma Gamble Contributed to Underperformance
Paris Saint-Germain’s decision to bring in Gianluigi Donnarumma proved to be a perplexing move that ultimately played a role in a season of underwhelming results for the Champions League holders. The transfer, viewed as a gamble at the time, didn’t immediately translate into the expected on-field success.
Donnarumma, currently playing as a goalkeeper for Manchester City and captaining the Italy national team, is widely considered one of the world’s top goalkeepers. He joined PSG in 2021 after a successful stint with AC Milan, where he debuted in Serie A at just 16 years and 242 days old, becoming the second-youngest goalkeeper to ever play in the league.
During his time with PSG, spanning from 2021 to 2025, Donnarumma made 104 appearances. However, the team failed to consistently meet expectations, particularly in the Champions League. He recently was awarded The Best Men’s Goalkeeper 2025 although with PSG, having secured a UEFA Champions League trophy and finishing as runner-up at the FIFA Club World Cup.
As of March 4, 2026, Donnarumma has transitioned to Manchester City, where he has made 26 appearances. Throughout his international career, he has earned 79 caps for Italy, leading the team to victory in the 2020 UEFA European Championship and the 2021 UEFA Nations League, and finishing as runners-up in the 2022 CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions.
