Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has prioritized the development of the nation’s social and solidarity economy, outlining plans to bolster the sector during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. The move underscores the administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction.

Faye reiterated that 2026 is designated as the “Year of Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy,” signaling a focused effort to leverage this economic model for sustainable development. He directed officials to fully implement the national policy framework for the social and solidarity economy, including the establishment of a national registry for the sector.

During the meeting, President Faye instructed the Minister of Microfinance and the Social and Solidarity Economy to expedite the implementation of mechanisms designed to promote the sector’s growth. This includes accelerating the creation of a national registry for the social and solidarity economy.

The President emphasized the need for broad participation, calling for collaboration between public institutions, the private sector, microfinance organizations, women, youth, and community groups. He envisions a national doctrine for the endogenous development of the solidarity economy.

Faye also highlighted the importance of integrating sports and cultural associations into this economic framework, recognizing their potential contribution to local development. He stressed the need to improve the effectiveness of poverty reduction programs, particularly through the reliability of the National Unique Registry.

To further support these efforts, the President called for strengthening the restructuring of social protection and national solidarity programs, ensuring better coordination between state initiatives and local efforts within the social and solidarity economy.

Looking ahead, President Faye has tasked the Minister of Microfinance and the Social and Solidarity Economy with preparing the inaugural session of the National Council for the Social and Solidarity Economy, scheduled before the end of October 2026. This council is expected to solidify strategic direction and enhance the sector’s socio-economic impact.
