Beirut, Lebanon – The humanitarian crisis in Lebanon is rapidly escalating, with approximately 700,000 people displaced from their homes due to ongoing conflict, according to a recent report by UNICEF. The surge in violence, particularly in the southern regions and the outskirts of Beirut, is creating a dire situation for civilians, especially children.

UNICEF warned that the civilian population is bearing a heavy cost, with a particularly alarming rate of casualties among children and adolescents. Around 200,000 of those displaced are children and teenagers living in increasingly difficult conditions. The escalating conflict has prompted a wave of internal displacement from southern Lebanon and the suburbs of Beirut, with many seeking refuge in temporary camps.

“I am shocked by the speed at which children are being killed and injured,” said Edward Beigbeder, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. “Children are being killed and injured at a terrifying rate.”

Data from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health indicates that at least 83 children and 42 women are among the more than 500 people killed since the start of the fighting, with an average of 100 fatalities per day. The situation underscores the devastating impact of the conflict on the country’s most vulnerable populations.

The crisis is compounded by intensified Israeli airstrikes targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Bekaa region, and southern Lebanon. UNICEF reported that, on average, more than 10 children are killed each day across Lebanon, and approximately 36 are injured during the past week alone. Beigbeder emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation and protection of children.

Recent reports indicate that the number of displaced Lebanese has risen to approximately 780,000 since the beginning of the Israeli offensive. The growing displacement figures highlight the increasing strain on resources and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.

The situation in Lebanon is further complicated by ongoing regional tensions, including conflicts involving Iran. The country is facing what one UN official described as a “comprehensive” humanitarian disaster and a “perfect storm” of challenges.
