Stephen Curry’s ‘GOAT’ Scores Considerable at the Box Office, Brings a Taste of China to the Premiere
Stephen Curry is adding another accomplishment to his already impressive resume – a hit animated film. GOAT, or 奇迹梦之队 (Qí Jì Mèng zhī Duì) as it’s known in China, is proving to be a box office success, and the star brought a touch of his fondness for Chinese cuisine to the film’s recent premiere.
The film, directed by Tyree Dillihay and co-directed by Adam Rosette, debuted in North America on February 13, 2026, and launched in China on March 14, 2026. Produced by Sony Animation – the team behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – and Curry’s own Unanimous Media, GOAT tells the story of a small goat named Will who overcomes his size to pursue his dreams of playing professional basketball. The narrative follows Will as he navigates a challenging team dynamic and faces off against a rival named鬃王 (Máng Wáng).
GOAT opened to $26 million domestically, landing at number two in its opening weekend, before leaping to the top spot the following week with $17 million. To date, the film has grossed $58.3 million in North America and surpassed $100 million globally, all on a production budget of $70 to $80 million. The film’s success adds to a strong year for animated features and demonstrates the continued appeal of sports-themed entertainment.
The voice cast is a star-studded one, featuring Caleb McLaughlin, Gabrielle Union, and Stephen Curry as Lenny Williamson, a giraffe. Ayesha Curry as well lends her voice to the film, alongside David Harbour, Jennifer Lewis, and Nicola Coughlan. Notably, the film also includes several NBA and WNBA players, with Dwyane Wade voicing a bull, Kevin Love as a gorilla, and Andre Iguodala as a referee.
At the China premiere, Curry expressed his affection for Chinese cuisine, sharing that he’s been missing the country’s hot pot and spicy crawfish. According to reports, Curry greeted Chinese audiences with enthusiasm. The premiere in Beijing was also highlighted by Bilibili, showcasing the excitement surrounding the film’s release.
The film’s visual style draws inspiration from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, utilizing a distinctive stop-motion aesthetic to enhance its visual impact. According to Baidu Baike, the film focuses on the importance of teamwork and collaboration. CORTIS provided the soundtrack for the film, adding another layer of energy to the already popular release.
