“Joe Speedboot” Arrives in Dutch Cinemas, Praised for Faithful Adaptation
Joe Speedboot, the film adaptation of Tommy Wieringa’s bestselling 2005 novel, premiered in the Netherlands on March 9, 2026 and is already garnering attention for its sensitive portrayal of a unique friendship. The film, directed by Sam de Jong, centers on Fransje Hermans, a teenager whose life takes an unexpected turn when he meets the adventurous Joe Speedboot.
The story follows Fransje, who, following a mysterious accident, is left with limited physical abilities – unable to speak clearly, experiencing spasticity, and with movement restricted to his right arm. His seemingly bleak existence in the fictional town of Lomark is revitalized by the arrival of Joe, who introduces him to fresh experiences and dreams.
Daan Buringa stars as Fransje Hermans, with Tobias Kersloot portraying Joe Speedboot. The cast also includes QiQi van Boheemen, Ramses van Hall, Chris Peters, Hadewych Minis, and Janni Goslinga. Buringa’s performance has been particularly noted, with the actor revealing a personal connection to the role; he initially thought the character was based on his own life after receiving a diagnosis of a muscle disease.
Critics have lauded the film’s fidelity to Wieringa’s source material. The adaptation, produced by BALDR Film and Czar Film in collaboration with VPRO, aims to honor the spirit of the novel while bringing the story to a new audience. Wieringa himself expressed curiosity about the final product, questioning what the adaptation would ultimately become.
The film’s production wasn’t without its challenges. Early attempts to adapt the novel in 2005 were halted by disagreements between Wieringa and the initial production company, IJswater Films, over the screenplay.
Joe Speedboot is distributed by September Film and runs for 98 minutes. The film’s release adds to a growing slate of Dutch cinema gaining international recognition.
