ERBIL – A French soldier was killed Thursday, March 12, 2026, in a drone strike on a military base in Erbil, Iraq, amid escalating conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel. The death marks the first casualty for French forces as Europe attempts to navigate the increasingly volatile situation in the Middle East.

The attack too wounded five other French soldiers, according to confirmation from President Emmanuel Macron.

“Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion of the 7th Chasseurs Alpins Battalion from Varces has fallen for France during the attack in the Erbil region of Iraq,” Macron wrote on X, Friday, March 13, 2026.

“To his family, to his comrades in arms, I want to express all my affection and the solidarity of the Nation,” Macron continued.

Macron condemned the attack as unacceptable, but did not identify the perpetrators. “The war in Iran cannot justify such attacks,” he stated.

He reaffirmed that the French military presence in Iraq is part of a strict framework for combating terrorism. More than 900 French soldiers are stationed in the country as part of a U.S.-led mission launched over a decade ago to weaken and destroy the Islamic State group (ISIS). The incident underscores the broadening scope of the conflict and the risks faced by international forces operating in the region.
