Recent changes to Fortnite’s in-game currency, V-Bucks, have sparked widespread backlash from the game’s community, with some players vowing to boycott the upcoming Battle Pass and cancel monthly subscriptions.
The decisions from Epic Games have been met with strong negative reactions, as social media platforms and Reddit forums filled with criticism from players who sense the changes devalue their purchases. Concerns also centered on the timing of the announcement.
The launch of Fortnite Chapter 5 initially received a positive reception, but enthusiasm has waned for some players due to a combination of technical issues within the game, an increase in paid items, and an unusually long season duration.
Epic Games offered a brief explanation for the V-Bucks price increase, stating: “The cost of running Fortnite has increased significantly, so we are raising prices to cover expenses.”
This concise statement did little to quell player frustration, with many arguing it lacked sufficient context regarding the game’s operating costs or financial performance. The fact that Fortnite is one of the world’s highest-grossing video games only intensified the discontent within the player base.
I’ve been subscribed to Fortnite Crew since its launch in 2020, but today I’ve decided to cancel it after the news of the V-Bucks reduction & increase in pricing.
The news yesterday was my breaking point with Crew especially because I’ve been so dissapointed with how its been… pic.twitter.com/noKuJkJ6ID — Rezztro (@Rezztro) March 11, 2026
Popular content creator Typical Gamer discussed the controversy surrounding the V-Bucks changes in a YouTube livestream, stating he partially understands Epic Games’ reasoning but noted the player community feels deeply frustrated with how the changes were handled.
“Honestly, I don’t doubt that the cost of running Fortnite has gone up, but it’s hard to judge accurately because we don’t have all the internal information on how the company is managed,” he said. He added that Epic Games has historically avoided disclosing the actual size of the teams and studios continuously working to maintain the game’s content flow.
Typical Gamer pointed out that the community has recently felt that the game has been overly focused on promotional collaborations, saying, “The general impression has been that all we’re getting is collab after collab, and that’s what Epic has been focusing on.” He explained that combining this perception with the price increases led to an angry response from players, with some announcing a boycott of the next Battle Pass.
He also felt the timing of the decision was poor, suggesting that if the company had waited and focused on story elements or revitalized Save the World mode with a strong season, the reaction might have been less severe. However, he noted that Fortnite rarely reverses course on decisions like these.
Reactions on social media, particularly on Reddit, were even more critical, with some players describing the changes as a sign of the game’s decline and accusing management of trying to maximize profits by reducing value and raising prices.
Several users posted images of themselves canceling their Fortnite Crew subscriptions, pledging not to participate in the game’s next season.
An Epic Games employee, known as EmptyTux, attempted to address the situation through responses on Reddit, writing:
I appreciate your shares and comments today. We’ve received a lot of feedback, not just about the V-Bucks changes, but also about Fortnite and especially this season. I’m looking forward to sharing an update next week.
