Tehran, Iran – The United States has placed a substantial bounty on the head of Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly appointed Supreme Leader of Iran, according to multiple reports. This move comes amid heightened tensions following a U.S.-Israeli military strike and the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s previous supreme leader, on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
President Donald Trump announced the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a social media post, stating, “This is not only Justice for the people of Iran, but for all Great Americans, and those people from many Countries throughout the World, that have been killed or mutilated by Khamenei and his gang of bloodthirsty THUGS.” Iranian state TV confirmed Khamenei’s death Saturday night.
The 86-year-old Khamenei had ruled Iran for nearly four decades, succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini after his death in 1989. His passing followed years of escalating conflict with the U.S. And Israel, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear program. The assassination occurred after widespread protests within Iran, brutally suppressed by security forces, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of approximately 30,000 people.
Mojtaba Khamenei was quickly named as his father’s successor, a move that drew immediate criticism from President Trump, who described the fresh leader as a “lightweight.” Trump stated he was “not happy” with Mojtaba Khamenei’s ascendance, and previously said he wanted to be involved in approving Iran’s new leadership. “Khamenei’s son is a lightweight,” Trump told Axios last Thursday.
The new Supreme Leader, 57, had previously worked behind the scenes during his father’s reign and has close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Although, Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly threatened to expand the conflict, according to reports. The development underscores growing regional instability and the potential for further escalation.
Trump has also indicated that he expects approval for the new leader, stating, “He’s going to have to get approval from us… If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long.” He also suggested that the role of Supreme Leader is currently a temporary one. Trump framed the killing of Ali Khamenei as retribution for those harmed by Iran’s leadership, offering “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to seize back their Country.”
The U.S. Has also drawn parallels to a previous intervention in Venezuela, where Trump referenced his involvement in the appointment of Delcy Rodriguez as interim president after the capture of Nicolás Maduro.
