Leptospirosis Cases Rise, Sparking Public Health Concerns
Public health officials are monitoring a rise in leptospirosis cases in multiple regions, prompting calls for increased vigilance and preventative measures. The bacterial infection, spread through contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals, can cause a range of symptoms and, in severe cases, can be fatal. Since the beginning of 2026, La Réunion has experienced a significant increase in leptospirosis cases, exceeding typical levels seen during the rainy season. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions. As of this reporting, 75 confirmed cases have been identified across the island, with one reported death, according to regional health authorities.
Similar concerns are emerging in Mauritius, where three deaths attributed to leptospirosis have been recorded since January. Dr. Vasantrao Gujadhur, a senior advisor to the Ministry of Health, has emphasized the alarming nature of this figure and is advocating for proactive testing of rats in different regions to pinpoint areas with the highest infection rates. Dr. Gujadhur also cautioned authorities to remain vigilant regarding the potential for outbreaks of the plague.
In addition to rat testing, Dr. Gujadhur suggests targeted testing in various regions to identify hotspots of the disease. Elsewhere, reports indicate 75 cases of leptospirosis have been confirmed since the start of the year, with one fatality. Imaz Press reported on the ongoing situation.
