KV Mechelen Reaches Champions’ Play-offs After Historic Victory Over Anderlecht

KV Mechelen secured a spot in the Champions’ Play-offs for the first time, defeating RSC Anderlecht in a thrilling match that sparked jubilant celebrations. The victory marks a significant milestone for the club and its supporters, who erupted in a joyous display after the final whistle.

The match, played on March 16, 2026, saw KV Mechelen overcome a tough opponent in Anderlecht, who had been showing improved form under Jérémy Taravel. Coach Fred Vanderbiest acknowledged the challenge, stating, “We are playing against Anderlecht, not Janneke, and Mieke.”

Vanderbiest highlighted the danger posed by Anderlecht’s Thorgan Hazard, who has scored five goals in his last four matches, and Nathan De Cat, noting De Cat’s increased attacking role. “De Cat plays slightly higher. In a team that is doing well, the statistics naturally improve,” Vanderbiest explained. He also emphasized the collective threat Anderlecht presents, stating, “If you focus on one player, there is always someone else ready to step up. With players like De Cat, Yari Verschaeren, and Hazard, the danger can come from anywhere.”

The atmosphere surrounding the match was electric, with fans creating a vibrant spectacle both inside and outside the stadium. Videos circulating online show players and supporters celebrating wildly after the final whistle, reveling in the historic qualification. Commentator Peter Vandenbempt described the scene as an “explosion” of joy.

Vanderbiest also reflected on the team’s approach, acknowledging that their style of play may not always be aesthetically pleasing but is effective. He drew a parallel to Anderlecht’s own past successes, stating, “I remember that Anderlecht once played realistic football. It made them champions, for the last time so far. Sometimes you just have to do it that way to get results.”

This win represents a modern era for KV Mechelen, built on a foundation of “no-nonsense football” as described by De Standaard, and propels them into the top tier of Belgian football competition.
