The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has urged American citizens in Iraq to depart immediately, citing ongoing threats. The embassy issued the statement on Monday, March 16, 2026, as security concerns rise in the region.

In a statement, the embassy reminded U.S. Nationals of the “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory for Iraq. It advised American citizens: “Do not travel to Iraq due to risks of terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, and limited ability of the U.S. Government to provide emergency services to U.S. Citizens in Iraq. Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Depart now if you are there.”

The call for Americans to leave comes after the announcement of the death of Abu Ali Al-Askari, a security official with Kata’ib Hezbollah in Iraq. The news was announced by Abu Hussein Al-Hamidawi, the group’s Secretary-General.

Al-Hamidawi described Al-Askari as “a brave voice that was not silenced in the face of injustice, and a truthful tongue that contributed to consolidating the meanings of pride and steadfastness in the souls of the fighters.” He also noted Al-Askari’s role in documenting confrontations and countering what he called biased media coverage.

The U.S. Embassy’s warning underscores the volatile security situation in Iraq and the potential for escalating tensions. The development could further complicate diplomatic efforts in the region.
