MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich is facing a goalkeeper crisis ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Atalanta, and could turn to 16-year-aged Leonard Prescott, a New York native, to start in goal.
An unlikely string of injuries has sidelined Bayern’s top three goalkeepers, leaving the German champion in a difficult position as they prepare for the second leg of their round-of-16 encounter. Bayern won the first leg against Atalanta 6-1.
First-choice Manuel Neuer is currently recovering from a calf muscle tear. Prescott was on the bench for last week’s Champions League victory, gaining experience with the professional team. He currently starts for Bayern’s under-19 squad.
The situation worsened after Jonas Urbig sustained a concussion in the final minute of the recent match. Backup Sven Ulreich tore his right adductor in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen and will be “sidelined for the time being,” according to a team statement.
If Neuer and the other injured goalkeepers are unable to recover in time, Prescott could be in line for a Champions League debut. He was also the backup for Ulreich on Saturday.
Prescott, born in New York, began his career at Union Berlin before joining Bayern’s academy in 2023. He has also represented the German under-17 national team.
Other goalkeeping options are limited, as reserve-team goalkeeper Leon Klanac has been injured since December, and Daniel Peretz is currently on loan at Southampton. Jannis Bärtl, 19, could also be considered, having played reserve games and been on the bench for two Bundesliga matches this season.
