As of January 20, 2026, the Polish registry of PESEL data shows that 278,457 women in Poland bear the name Beata. The name is carried by several well-known Polish figures, including singer Beata Kozidrak, actress Beata Tyszkiewicz, and former Prime Minister Beata Szydło. However, while the Polish and Romanian languages both draw heavily from Latin and Romance languages, the Romanian word “beată”—which sounds almost identical—has a completely different meaning: it means “drunk.”
“Beata” isn’t the only name that takes on a different hue when translated. The name Marta, also widely popular in Poland, can elicit a chuckle from Spanish speakers. In Spanish, “marta” means… a weasel. Another interesting case is Kamila. A consistently popular choice for parents in Poland, the name takes on an unexpected meaning in Bulgaria, where “kamila” translates to “camel.”
