In Vienna, a section of scaffolding and formwork collapsed during an attic renovation, resulting in the deaths of four workers and leaving one with serious injuries.
Four people died Tuesday in Vienna, Austria, after a portion of scaffolding collapsed during construction work. One individual sustained critical injuries, according to reports from the Austrian Press Agency (APA).
The incident occurred on Porzellangasse street in the Alsergrund district, the ninth district of Vienna, during concrete work related to an attic renovation. At approximately 2:30 PM local time, a section of scaffolding, formwork, and large pieces of concrete fell into a courtyard of an traditional, renovated building.
Complex Rescue Operation
Five people were on that section of the scaffolding at the time of the collapse. After approximately 90 minutes, rescue workers located a severely injured 45-year-old man with serious head and spinal injuries, as well as broken arms. Authorities later confirmed that four additional workers had died as a result of the accident.
Police and the labor inspectorate are interviewing witnesses, including the crane operator who remained in the cabin for three hours. The surviving worker will likewise be questioned as soon as his condition allows.
