MANCHESTER – Real Madrid advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals after securing a 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Wednesday, March 17, 2026, completing a 4-1 aggregate win. The match at the Etihad Stadium was dramatically altered early on when Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva was sent off.
City’s hopes of overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit were dealt a severe blow in the 17th minute. Bernardo Silva received a red card for deliberately handling the ball on the goal line, preventing a clear scoring opportunity for Vinícius Júnior.
Vinícius Júnior converted the resulting penalty, giving Real Madrid a 1-0 lead on the night and extending their aggregate advantage to 4-0. Despite being a man down, Manchester City managed to pull one back through Erling Haaland in the 41st minute.
The Citizens continued to push for an equalizer, but goals from Julián Álvarez and Aymeric Laporte were disallowed for offside. Similarly, goals from Federico Valverde and Vinícius Júnior for Real Madrid were as well ruled out.
Vinícius Júnior ultimately sealed the victory for Real Madrid with a second goal in stoppage time, finishing off a move started by a Tchouaméni cross. The result means Pep Guardiola’s side fall at the same stage to Real Madrid for the third consecutive year in the Champions League.
Real Madrid will face the winner of the tie between Atalanta Bergamo and Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals. Bayern Munich currently holds a commanding 6-1 lead after the first leg.
