Aldi has confirmed it has no current plans to open its Belgian stores on Sundays and has voiced criticism of the initiative. However, the discount retailer stated it is closely monitoring market developments and customer needs to maintain its competitive position and ensure sustainable employment.
Lidl’s potential move would make it the first discounter in Belgium to offer Sunday shopping, joining established chains like Albert Heijn, Delhaize, and Carrefour. Colruyt, however, maintains that Sunday openings are not economically viable for its larger stores, although its smaller Okay convenience stores already open on Sunday mornings.
Aldi stated it is remaining attentive to market trends and customer expectations to ensure its competitiveness and the sustainability of employment.
