While genetics can play a role in cancer development, lifestyle choices significantly impact risk, according to growing scientific evidence. Understanding these factors is crucial for preventative health measures and overall well-being.
“Our daily choices have a real impact on the risk of the disease,” noted oncologist Marcela Gondim Borges Guimarães, emphasizing that a person’s genetic inheritance isn’t the sole determinant of whether or not they develop cancer.
Experts indicate, as reported by the Metrópoles newspaper, that certain behaviors and daily habits can contribute to tumor development through chronic inflammation, hormonal changes and DNA damage.
Here are seven habits to be aware of.
7 Habits That Increase Cancer Risk
1. Smoking
Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of cancer. A single cigarette contains dozens of substances that can alter cell DNA, increasing the likelihood of tumor development.
Oncologist Luiz Augusto Reis notes that tobacco is associated with at least 16 types of cancer, including those of the lung, bladder, liver, and oral cavity.
2. Excess Weight
Obesity is too a significant risk factor for cancer. Excess body fat causes hormonal and metabolic changes that can stimulate uncontrolled cell growth.
More than 10 types of cancer have been linked to obesity, including tumors of the breast, endometrium, liver, kidney, and colon.
3. Sedentary Lifestyle
A lack of physical activity increases cancer risk. Here’s because inactivity leads to weight gain and metabolic changes. Regular exercise helps reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and strengthen the immune system.
4. Alcohol Consumption
During metabolism, the body produces a substance called acetaldehyde, which can damage DNA and cause mutations. Even small amounts of alcohol can elevate the risk of cancers of the breast, esophagus, and liver.
5. Diet High in Ultra-Processed Foods
Foods like sausages, bacon, and other highly processed products have also been associated with an increased cancer risk.
These foods contribute to weight gain and often replace more nutritious options in the diet.
7. Insufficient Sleep
Prioritizing sleep hygiene is essential for overall health, and poor sleep habits can influence cancer risk. Studies suggest that consistently getting less than six or seven hours of sleep per night can affect the immune system, cause inflammation, and disrupt hormone levels.
