Brazilian Senator Sergio Moro is in talks to join the Liberal Party (PL), potentially setting the stage for a run for governor of Paraná state, according to multiple reports.
Moro met with PL leaders to discuss the possibility of joining the party and a potential candidacy for the governorship, sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed. The move comes as current Paraná Governor Ratinho is reportedly traveling in Switzerland.
Valdemar Costa Neto, a key figure within the PL, emphasized the importance of having a strong candidate in Paraná, stating, “We cannot be without a platform in Paraná.”
The former judge gained national prominence in 2015 as a lead investigator in Operation Car Wash, a sweeping corruption probe. He later served as Minister of Justice and Public Security under President Jair Bolsonaro from 2019 to 2020. Sergio Moro was elected to the Federal Senate for Paraná in October 2022.
The potential alliance underscores the PL’s efforts to bolster its influence in the upcoming elections. The move could significantly impact the political landscape in Paraná, a key state in Brazilian politics.
