Peer support, a practice rooted in mutual aid among individuals with lived experience of mental health conditions, is gaining recognition as a vital component of the recovery process. This approach centers on sharing experiences with illness and the journey toward wellness.
Peer support can seize many forms, including participation in support groups run by organizations of people with lived experience, meetings within peer-led groups, and the integration of peer support specialists – both volunteers and professionals – into traditional healthcare settings. This type of support is particularly important as mental health challenges continue to affect a significant portion of the population.
In Carpentras, Eric Joly and Michel Dugnat, both directly impacted by mental health conditions, are actively involved in providing peer support. They are president and a member, respectively, of “Chime,” which translates to “Contact, Hope, Identity, Redonner du sens à sa vie, à ce que l’on a vécu, et Pouvoir d’agir et de décider” – or “Contact, Hope, Identity, Meaning, Empowerment.” Through their guidance and expertise, Joly and Dugnat assist individuals navigating the mental healthcare system in their recovery.
