Individuals with certain blood types may have a naturally lower risk of developing heart disease, according to recent research. A large-scale analysis of data suggests that people with A, B, and AB blood types are more prone to blockages in their arteries and, heart attacks, compared to other blood groups. The increased tendency for blood clotting in these groups is believed to be a primary factor contributing to this elevated risk.
Blood Type O Offers Potential Protection
Those with blood type O appear to be the most resilient against heart attack and blood clot (thrombosis) risk, according to analyses conducted by scientists across thousands of cases. Experts note that type O blood contains lower levels of clotting proteins, which may help keep blood vessels clear. This finding highlights the complex interplay between genetics and cardiovascular health.
Increased Risk for Type A Individuals

Individuals with type A blood demonstrate a higher risk of developing high cholesterol and heart disease. Researchers have also found that those with AB blood types are more susceptible to vascular problems like blood clots.
The study revealed a “genetic shield” effect for those with type O blood, showing a significantly lower incidence of heart disease compared to other groups.
Blood Type Linked to Other Health Risks

The research indicates that blood type isn’t just associated with heart health, but also with the risk of certain cancers. Specifically, individuals with type O blood appear to have the lowest risk of developing stomach and pancreatic cancer.
Those with A, B, and AB blood types have a higher risk of stomach cancer, even as individuals with type O blood demonstrate a much lower risk. People with type O blood may also have a reduced risk of certain types of colorectal cancer.
Impact of the Pandemic: Analyses conducted during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic revealed that individuals with type A blood were at a higher risk of experiencing more severe illness if infected with the virus.
Pancreatic Cancer and Bacteria: Dr. Sanjay Aggarwal from the Holistic Health Center in Delhi highlighted research on pancreatic cancer. “In light of studies on bacterial infections, We see quite accurate to say that individuals with type O blood are more protected against pancreatic cancer,” he stated.
