Children helped police in pursuit with surprising ingenuity
What began as a traditional Easter egg hunt quickly turned into an unexpected assist for local authorities. As approximately 30 children and their parents searched for hidden eggs near a disused building off Horsham Road, they noticed a police helicopter from the National Police Air Service (NPAS) circling overhead. It soon became clear that officers were searching for someone, as two men sprinted across a nearby field.

Without any prompting from adults, the children devised a plan to help. They lay down in a freshly ploughed field and arranged their bodies to form a giant arrow, pointing in the direction the suspects had fled. The NPAS helicopter crew immediately spotted the formation.
NPAS Sergeant Paul Sochon later described the scene, stating, “I’m sure the last thing the group of daring Capel residents expected when they set out on Friday afternoon was to abandon their Easter egg hunt to assist us in a police search, but the initiative they demonstrated proved to be invaluable.” Following the children’s direction, the helicopter guided ground officers to the two suspects – men aged 27 and 28 – who were subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary at the nearby disused building.
Both men were later released on bail, and the case was ultimately dropped due to insufficient evidence. After the successful intervention, the NPAS crew landed near the Easter egg hunt to personally thank the children for their assistance, even purchasing treats for them as a gesture of gratitude.
