Sony is preparing a significant branding shift, planning to retire the “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” names by September 2026. The change comes as the company looks to better reflect the evolution and expansion of its digital services, which now extend far beyond the original concept of a simple network.
“We’d like to inform you that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has strategically decided to phase out the terms “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” across our platform in order to properly capture the breadth of our evolving digital services,” the company stated in a communication to developers.
The transition will be purely visual, with no impact on core functionality for players. Features like online multiplayer, friend lists, and trophy support will remain unaffected. This move signals a broader effort to align the PlayStation brand identity with its current, more comprehensive offerings.
Sony explained the decision is intended to “represent better the amplitude of our evolving digital services.” Today’s PlayStation ecosystem encompasses subscription services, cloud gaming, a digital storefront, and integrations with other platforms – a substantial leap beyond the initial scope of PSN.
The phasing out of the PSN branding will occur gradually, with all references expected to disappear from interfaces, games, and external services by September 2026. Developers will receive updated branding guidelines alongside a Technical Requirements Checklist update in the fall of 2026 to ensure consistency.
As of now, Sony has not revealed a replacement for the PSN name, leaving open the possibility that the services will simply be integrated under the broader PlayStation brand.
