The 98th annual Japanese High School Baseball Invitational Tournament, known as the Spring Koshien, commenced on Thursday, March 19, 2026, with a notable upset in the opening game. Tokyo’s Teikyo High School defeated last summer’s national champion, Okinawa Shogaku, by a score of 4-3.

The Anan Kō versus Chukyo Daichukyō game saw Chukyo Daichukyō emerge victorious with a 2-1 win. Matsuda of Chukyo Daichukyō hit the first home run of the tournament. Anan Kō’s pitcher, Oda, and Chukyo Daichukyō’s pitcher, Ando, both delivered strong performances on the mound.
Adding a local angle to the Anan Kō team, player Kōsaka has pledged to honor his grandfather, the chairman of what is known locally as “baseball town.” This personal connection highlights the deep-rooted community ties often found within Japanese high school baseball.
