South Pars Gas Field: Israel Attack & Escalating Iran Conflict

CNN  —

An Israeli strike targeting Iranian facilities at the South Pars gas field has significantly escalated the conflict, prompting retaliatory attacks by Iran against key energy infrastructure in neighboring Gulf states and sending oil prices climbing. The situation has even drawn a direct threat from the United States, with President Trump vowing to “blow up” South Pars should Iran continue its offensive.

But what exactly is the South Pars gas field, and why is it so crucial?

South Pars is part of the world’s largest natural gas reserve. Iran shares the offshore field, located in the Persian Gulf, with Qatar, which refers to its portion as North Dome. According to Reuters, the entire field holds approximately 1,800 trillion cubic feet of usable gas – enough to meet global needs for 13 years.

Why is it so vital? Gas production from South Pars is Iran’s primary source of national energy supply. Iran has already experienced power outages due to disruptions in gas supply, meaning any impact to the field would affect its ability to generate electricity and heat homes.

Global Concerns: Qatar has invested billions in developing its portion of the gas field and is a major global supplier of LNG. During Israeli strikes against Iran in June 2025 that impacted parts of South Pars, officials told CNN that the Qatari portion was a “vital energy source for the United States, Europe, and the world.”

“Serious Escalation”:** Arab nations have condemned the attacks on infrastructure linked to South Pars. The United Arab Emirates described the strikes as a “serious escalation” posing a direct threat not only to global energy supplies but also to regional security. Qatar called the attacks on South Pars a “dangerous and irresponsible step.”

Retaliatory Strikes: Iran responded by attacking key energy facilities in the region, causing significant damage to Qatar’s main energy hub, Ras Laffan Industrial City, a key plant for natural gas processing. Two refineries in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, were also targeted. Saudi Arabia subsequently stated it reserved the right to take military action against Iran if necessary.

Energy Crisis Deepens: The world is already facing a severe energy shortage, with the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed and strikes again disrupting markets and driving global oil prices higher. One analyst told CNN that damaging energy production infrastructure “further delays timelines,” as reconstruction could take months or even years.

Trump’s Threat: President Donald Trump threatened to “totally destroy” the entire Iranian gas field if Iran continues to attack energy facilities in Qatar. Trump claimed the United States “knew nothing” about the Israeli attack on South Pars. However, two Israeli officials told CNN on Wednesday that the strike was carried out in coordination with the United States.
