Growing Concerns Over Potential Retaliation:
Drones Spotted Over Military Bases Housing U.S. Officials Amid Fears of Iranian Response.
Several unidentified drones have been detected flying over the U.S. Military base Fort McNair in Washington, D.C.
The base is also home to Foreign Minister Marco Rubio and Defense Minister Pete Hegseth.
According to The Washington Post, U.S. Authorities are now considering moving the two ministers for security reasons.
The identity of those behind the drones remains unknown.
Heightened Alert Status
The drone sightings coincide with ongoing U.S. And Israeli strikes against Iran, significantly escalating tensions in the region.
This increased risk is also being felt on American soil.
Several military bases have raised their security posture to “Charlie” alert, indicating intelligence suggests an attack may be imminent.
All in One Night
The most concerning incident occurred in Washington, D.C.
According to sources familiar with the matter, multiple drones were observed over Fort McNair during a single night in recent days.
The base is located just minutes from both the White House and Congress – but lacks the same security zone as other military installations in the area.
This makes the incident particularly serious.
– Cannot Comment
The mysterious drones have led to crisis meetings at the White House, where authorities are discussing how to respond, according to The Times.
One consideration is relocating Rubio and Hegseth, but they have remained at the base so far.
The Pentagon declined to comment on the matter to The Washington Post.
– The department cannot comment on the minister’s movements for security reasons, said spokesperson Sean Parnell.
Global Alert
U.S. Authorities have previously issued a global security alert.
All U.S. Embassies and diplomatic facilities have been asked to conduct immediate security assessments.
This comes amid fears that the conflict in the Middle East could have consequences far beyond the region.
The U.S. Has for years warned of Iranian plans for retaliation following the 2020 killing of General Qasem Soleimani in a U.S. Strike.
According to U.S. Officials, Iranian actors have previously attempted to monitor and threaten top U.S. Politicians – including through the use of drones.
During the 2024 election campaign, security services reportedly detected unidentified drones around Donald Trump on several occasions.
He was also informed that Iran wanted to kill him, and that there could be several operative groups in the U.S.
There is no confirmed link between Iran and the recent drone sightings in Washington.
Cheap and Small
Experiences from the war in Ukraine have truly shown how quickly drone technology is developing – and how difficult it can be to control.
Cheap, small, and often anonymous drones have been used for both surveillance and attack, making them a new and unpredictable element in modern warfare.
– Drones are on their way to becoming as important and decisive as the machine gun was during World War I, Major Christian Magnus Aartun of the Army School for Unmanned Systems told Dagbladet last week.
Precisely why the unidentified drones over Washington are causing extra concern.
The technology is readily available, difficult to trace, and increasingly sophisticated.
– Unmanned aerial vehicles have develop into a central military tool, and the use of drones in the Norwegian Armed Forces is set to increase dramatically, said Lieutenant Colonel Anders Grønli.
