The Vancouver Canucks are poised to have the best odds in the upcoming NHL Draft Lottery, hoping to land a potential franchise cornerstone.
The league has announced the lottery will be held on May 5, offering a pivotal moment for several teams looking to rebuild. Vancouver, finishing with one of the worst records in the league, enters the lottery with a 25.1 percent chance of securing the first overall pick, and a 43.7 percent chance of landing a top-two selection.
This marks a critical opportunity for the Canucks, who haven’t held a top-three draft pick since 1999, when they selected twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin with the second and third overall picks. Remarkably, Vancouver has never had the chance to select first overall in the NHL draft in its 56-year history.

The draft class is headlined by forward Gavin McKenna, though he isn’t considered a lock for the top spot. Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg and Canadian defenseman Keaton Verhoeff are also projected to be among the first players selected. The draft is a crucial event for teams hoping to accelerate their rebuilds and compete for championships.
Vancouver’s history with the draft lottery hasn’t been kind. The Canucks have suffered heartbreak in recent years, dropping in the draft order in four consecutive lotteries between 2016 and 2019. Despite holding favorable positions, they fell from third to fifth in 2016 and 2017, and slipped from sixth to seventh in 2018 and ninth to tenth in 2019. The franchise also experienced disappointment when entering the league in 1970, as the Buffalo Sabres secured the first pick and drafted future Hall of Famer Gilbert Perreault.
The televised lottery, a relatively new format, adds a layer of drama as teams’ odds are calculated in real-time. Last year, the New York Islanders defied the odds, winning the lottery and selecting Matthew Schaefer, who has since had a significant impact on the team’s performance.
