Action icon Chuck Norris has died, his family confirmed Friday, March 20, 2026. He was 86 years old.

“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” the family said in a statement posted to Instagram. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”

Born Carlos Ray Norris in Ryan, Oklahoma, on March 10, 1940, Norris served in the U.S. Air Force between 1958 and 1962. He went on to achieve international fame as a martial artist and actor, earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989. His breakthrough role came in Bruce Lee’s 1972 film, The Way of the Dragon and he later starred in action favorites like Lone Wolf McQuade and Missing in Action.

Norris cemented his status as a television star with his nine-season run as Cordell Walker in the CBS series Walker, Texas Ranger, a role that defined a generation of action television. The show remains popular in syndication today.

“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family,” the family statement continued. “He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved.”

Even as he took on fewer on-screen roles in recent decades, Norris maintained a significant online presence, becoming a beloved figure in internet culture thanks to the proliferation of memes celebrating his legendary toughness. The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans around the world, adding, “To him, you were not just fans, you were his friends.”

The family requested privacy during their time of grief, noting they were grateful for the prayers sent his way during his recent hospitalization. Norris’s passing marks the finish of an era for action cinema and television, leaving behind a legacy of iconic characters and unforgettable moments.
