Cádiz is poised for a significant upgrade to its healthcare infrastructure as a decades-long effort to build a modern hospital has finally reached a critical milestone. On March 20, 2026, officials signed an agreement to transfer land for the project, paving the way for construction to begin.

The agreement, finalized this Friday, brings together the Spanish Government, the Andalusian regional government (Junta de Andalucía), the Cádiz City Council, and the Zona Franca (Free Zone) consortium. María Jesús Montero, First Vice President of the Government and Minister of Finance, presided over the event, which included the signing of the agreement by Francisco González, Delegate of the State in the Zona Franca; Antonio Sanz, Regional Minister of Health, Presidency and Emergencies; and Bruno García, Mayor of Cádiz.

The agreement details the free transfer of a 33,582 square meter parcel located on Avenida Marconi, within the grounds of the former CASA factory, which is owned by the Zona Franca consortium. The land is already zoned for healthcare facilities, a crucial prerequisite for moving forward with the hospital’s construction.

Mayor Bruno García described the moment as an “extraordinary news” event, comparing it to other major urban developments in the city, such as the construction of the second bridge and the underground railway project. He stated that this represents a “dream arrive true” and a “firm and resounding” step towards an infrastructure long demanded by residents, emphasizing the key role played by the people of Cádiz, who “never gave up” on this historic demand.

Antonio Sanz of the Junta de Andalucía went further, calling the day “a historic day” that will shape the future of the city. He assured that the new center will be “one of the best hospitals in Spain,” boasting high care capacity, advanced technology, and a patient-centered approach. Sanz also confirmed the project’s inclusion in the Unidad Aceleradora de Proyectos, a program designed to expedite administrative processes and accelerate execution.

The delegate of the Zona Franca highlighted the collaborative spirit that unlocked this complex operation, noting the joint effort of administrations and technical teams to reach an agreement that had been stalled for years.

María Jesús Montero recalled that the project was first proposed over 20 years ago and defended the central government’s role in “unblocking” the initiative through the free transfer of land, valued at around 12 million euros. While celebrating the progress, she also stressed the importance of adhering to the established timelines, which set a maximum of eight years for the hospital’s construction.

The future hospital will not only expand Cádiz’s healthcare capacity but will also incorporate teaching and research facilities, enhancing both comfort and the quality of care. This project, after years of uncertainty, is now firmly on track.

The hospital is no longer just a promise but a concrete roadmap. Cádiz is finally seeing a modern healthcare facility within reach, one that aligns with its current and future needs.
