A surprise piano concert at Fudan University brought a touch of romance to the Shanghai campus on the evening of March 20th. The flash mob-style performance, hosted by the Fudan University Piano Association, captivated students with a blend of classical and contemporary melodies.
The event, titled “Talking ‘Piano’ and Talking Love,” featured performances of well-known romantic piano pieces. Pianists played everything from the score to La La Land’s “Epilogue” to popular songs like “告白气球” (Confession Balloon) and “青花瓷” (Blue and White Porcelain), reimagined for the occasion. A rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” too drew enthusiastic applause.
Classical pieces were also featured, including a selection from Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” “Castle in the Sky,” “Birds and Cicadas,” and Lyapunov’s First Impromptu Waltz. A four-hand piano performance of Bach’s “Sheep May Safely Graze” was a particular highlight.
The concert wasn’t just about the music; attendees also participated in a song-guessing game between performances, adding to the lively atmosphere.
“Being able to create these shining moments with everyone who loves music is the most precious thing I’ve gained in college,” shared Yang Jingwu, president of the Piano Association.
The performance comes as universities across China continue to foster vibrant arts communities, offering students opportunities to showcase their talents and connect through shared cultural experiences. The Fudan University Piano Association is planning further performances in the coming months, including a street music concert in early April and a salon concert with Shanghai Finance University in early May.
