Fresh Emojis and Smarter Music
The iOS 26.4 update for iPhone introduces a set of new emojis, including a Sasquatch, an Orca, and a ballet dancer. These additions, recently approved by the Unicode Consortium, are expected to quickly become popular in messaging apps.
Significant updates are also coming to Apple Music. A new “Concerts” feature will display local live performances by artists users frequently stream, eliminating the need to search on external websites. The app will also automatically generate playlists based on textual descriptions provided by the user – powered by Apple Intelligence AI in the background. Visually, the update includes new full-screen backgrounds for albums and playlists.
watchOS: One-Click Workouts Return
For Apple Watch users, watchOS 26.4 resolves a major usability issue. The Liquid Glass design introduced with iOS 26 had complicated operation of the Workout app, requiring multiple clicks to start a session – a setback for fitness enthusiasts.
The update restores the intuitive, one-click operation. A single tap on the Workout icon will immediately begin recording. The Apple Watch introduces a new metric, “Average Sleep Time,” which provides insights into sleep quality within the iPhone Health app.

TV and Vision Pro Ecosystem Continues to Expand
The software wave extends to other device categories as well. TvOS 26.4 officially retires the separate iTunes Movies and TV Shows apps. All purchases and rentals will now be managed through the central Apple TV app. A new option for “Permanent Audio Connection” via HDMI aims to improve stability in home theater setups.
For the Vision Pro headset, visionOS 26.4 delivers a technical advancement: Foveated Streaming. This rendering technique streams video in maximum quality only where the user is looking, while heavily compressing the peripheral image. This reduces latency and noticeably increases immersion in virtual worlds.
Background: Unified System, More Open Ecosystems
The iOS 26 generation marks a transitional phase for Apple. In 2025, with the jump from iOS 18 to 26, the company synchronized its versions across all product lines. The unified Liquid Glass design and deep Apple Intelligence integration were the result. However, this required a hardware split: devices with the A12 chip, such as the iPhone XS, are no longer supported.
At the same time, the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is forcing Apple to become more open. Throughout the iOS 26 lifecycle, the company must improve interoperability. Third-party smartwatches should be able to seamlessly interact with iPhone notifications, and alternatives to AirDrop and AirPlay must be integrated.
The final versions of the 26.4 updates are expected before the conclude of March. They are likely to be the last major feature additions before WWDC 2026 in June, where iOS 27 and watchOS 27 are expected to be unveiled. Until then, these refinement updates will ensure stability and address user feedback.
