1 Million Fake Euros Found in Sofia – 5 Arrested

Counterfeit money discovered in vehicles across the capital

Approximately 1 million euros in counterfeit banknotes were discovered during a raid by the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP) on Monday evening, March 23, 2026. Authorities found the fake currency in boxes and sacks inside multiple vehicles located in different areas of Sofia.

Five individuals were arrested, including foreign nationals, as the operation continues.

The operation was likewise announced in a Facebook post by Georgi Kandeв, acting Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Interior. According to Kandeв, four people were detained – two Bulgarian citizens and two Romanian citizens – during a transaction involving counterfeit money around 6:00 PM local time.

“During the search of two vehicles and personal searches, a large amount of counterfeit 100 euro banknotes was discovered. To date, the amount confirmed exceeds 500,000 euros,” he stated.
